A major service with a timing belt replacement is considerably more expensive, typically somewhere between 400 and 900 euros. The final bill depends on the make, the engine, the hourly labour rate and what needs replacing.

In short: minor service (oil, filters, inspection) about €150–350, major service with timing belt about €400–900, and the first service of a new car costs about the same as a minor service. The interval is usually once a year or the mileage in the service book. Your warranty does not require an authorised dealer, as long as the service follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts.

How much does a regular car service cost?

There is no standard price list, because every workshop sets its own rates. The exact task list is in the service book or the digital service record, and it usually includes:

an engine oil change to the manufacturer’s specification and a new oil filter,

replacing the air filter and the cabin (pollen) filter when due,

checking brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, wipers and fluid levels,

reading fault codes in the electronic systems and resetting the service reminder,

recording the service in the service book.

Every few years, brake fluid, spark plugs on petrol engines and the fuel filter on diesels also come due. These items often explain why one annual service costs more than the next.

Major car service: when it is due and why it costs more

A major service mainly means replacing the timing belt, which keeps the crankshaft and camshaft in sync. On most engines it is due somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 kilometres, and the belt’s age matters too, because rubber ages even if you drive little. The manufacturer sets the exact interval in kilometres and years.

The tensioner and idler pulleys are normally replaced at the same time, often along with the water pump and coolant, since the engine is already partly dismantled. Putting it off is risky: on many engines a snapped belt can damage the valves and pistons, and the repair then costs several times more than the service itself.

First service of a new car and the warranty

The first service of a new car is usually a minor service, carried out after one year or at the mileage set by the manufacturer. For new vehicles, regular servicing is a condition of the warranty and of any extended warranty. According to the Slovenian motoring club AMZS, many manufacturers’ warranty terms allow a delay of no more than one month or 1,000 extra kilometres.

Do I have to go to an authorised dealer?

Not necessarily. The EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation, which has been extended until 31 May 2028, guarantees independent garages access to servicing data, and a warranty may not be conditional on routine servicing exclusively within the authorised network. The conditions are clear: the service must follow the manufacturer’s schedule, parts and oils must be of equivalent quality, and the work must be documented. Warranty repairs of factory defects and recalls remain the job of an authorised workshop.

What determines the price of a service

Hourly labour rate

In early 2017, the car-repair section of the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia (OZS) calculated the economic hourly rate at 35 euros, and a 2021 analysis found it should be around 49 euros. Independent workshops are often close to these figures, while owners report hourly rates above 100 euros at authorised dealers of premium brands. Dealers frequently bill labour according to the manufacturer’s standard times rather than the time actually spent.

Materials and make

Oil to the manufacturer’s specification, original or equivalent filters and the amount of oil the engine takes can change the price by several dozen euros. Hybrids and electric cars need fewer tasks, but do not skip them: brake fluid, the cabin filter and an underbody check still apply.

How to save on a regular service

Ask for a written quote and the task list from the service book before your appointment.

Compare at least two workshops – an authorised dealer and a well-rated independent garage.

Check whether the manufacturer offers fixed-price packages or discounts for older cars.

Ask to be called before any extra repairs so you are not surprised by the bill.

Keep your invoices and service book stamps – a documented history raises the car’s value when you sell it.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a car need a regular service?

Most manufacturers specify a service once a year or after a set mileage, whichever comes first. The exact interval is in the service book, and newer cars also show it as a reminder on the dashboard.

Do I lose my warranty if an independent garage services my car?

Under EU rules, a manufacturer may not make the warranty conditional on routine servicing exclusively at authorised dealers. The service must follow the manufacturer’s schedule, use parts of equivalent quality and be recorded in the service book. Warranty repairs of factory defects are still carried out by an authorised workshop.

How much does the first service of a new car cost?

The first service is usually a minor service, so the price is similar: in Slovenia roughly 150 to 350 euros for common compact cars. Some brands include it in a maintenance package or offer it at a reduced price, so ask the dealer when you buy.

What is the difference between a minor and a major service?

A minor service covers the oil and filter change plus an inspection. A major service adds the timing belt with its tensioners and often the water pump, so it takes longer and costs several times more.

Can I be late for a scheduled service?

According to the Slovenian motoring club AMZS, many manufacturers’ warranty terms allow a delay of no more than one month or 1,000 extra kilometres. A longer delay can put the warranty at risk, so book in good time.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"How often does a car need a regular service?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Most manufacturers specify a service once a year or after a set mileage, whichever comes first.
