Slovenia charges motorway tolls for cars through an electronic vignette (e-vinjeta): for a passenger car the 7-day vignette costs €16, the monthly €32 and the annual €117.50. The vignette is linked to your registration number, so there is no sticker any more. The Karavanke tunnel to Austria is not covered and costs €9 per trip. If you drive on, Austria and Hungary also use vignettes, while Italy and Croatia charge by distance.
Slovenia vignette price: classes and rates
For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, the motorway company DARS does not charge per kilometre but sells time-based vignettes. Prices have not changed since June 2023, when they rose by 6.8 percent, and they still apply in 2026. In December 2025 the Slovenian infrastructure minister confirmed that the price of the annual vignette would stay the same.

| Class | Vehicles | 7 days | 1 month | 6 months | 1 year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | motorcycles | €8 | – | €32 | €58.70 |
| 2A | cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t, under 1.3 m high above the front axle | €16 | €32 | – | €117.50 |
| 2B | vehicles up to 3.5 t, 1.3 m or more above the front axle (many vans and light commercials) | €32 | €64.10 | – | €235 |
The class depends on the vehicle’s height above the front axle, not on its make or body style. With larger MPVs, vans and some SUVs it is worth measuring before you buy. Trailers do not need a separate vignette.
Who pays less, and tolls for electric cars
- Disabled drivers with an adapted vehicle that would otherwise be class 2B pay the class 2A price.
- Families with at least four dependent children under 18 can claim back half the price of a class 2B vignette.
- Electric and hybrid cars get no discount: they pay the same as petrol and diesel cars.
Annual vignette: how long it is valid
The annual vignette is not tied to the calendar year. It is valid for 12 months from the day you select at purchase: if you choose 15 April 2026 as the start, it runs until 15 April 2027. You can buy it up to 30 days in advance. The 7-day vignette covers seven consecutive days and the monthly one a month from the chosen date.
Annual vignettes that were still valid on 1 December 2025 were automatically extended by four months free of charge under an emergency law. If you bought yours before that, it expires later than the date on your receipt. The Slovenian government explained the measure on its gov.si portal (in Slovenian); the quickest way to check your actual expiry date is the DARS eVinjeta app, where a photo of the number plate is enough.
Where to buy the e-vignette
- in the official DARS online shop,
- at Petrol filling stations and other authorised sellers,
- at DarsGo service points in Ljubljana, Maribor, Obrežje, Fernetiči, Gruškovje and Hrušica,
- abroad through the Austrian operator ASFINAG and the German motoring club ADAC.
DARS warns that other online resellers are not authorised and often add a commission. Enter the registration number, country and class carefully: a purchase with wrong details is treated as if no toll had been paid.
Fines and special tolls in Slovenia
Driving on a motorway or expressway without a valid vignette carries a €300 fine, and moving a registration to another vehicle or one in a different class without permission costs €500. Each new entry onto the motorway counts as a separate offence.
Karavanke tunnel toll
The vignette does not cover the Karavanke tunnel between Slovenia and Austria. Since 1 January 2026 a single trip for a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes costs €9 (previously €8.80), and a non-transferable multi-trip card for this class costs €40.40. The price is now adjusted for inflation every year. You pay at the toll plaza in cash or by card.
Coastal expressways without a vignette
Since the start of 2026 passenger cars no longer need a vignette on the Škofije–Koper and Koper–Izola expressways, which the government reclassified as main roads. The measure is temporary and will last until the Koper–Dragonja expressway is built.
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, including larger motorhomes, do not use vignettes. They pay per kilometre with a DarsGo on-board unit, registered at a DARS point of sale or online.
Tolls in neighbouring countries: Austria, Hungary, Italy, Croatia
On a holiday drive you will almost always cross at least one more country with tolls. The systems differ a lot, so it helps to know what awaits you over the border.

| Country | System | Passenger car (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Austria | vignette (digital or sticker) | 1 day €9.60, 10 days €12.80, 2 months €32, year €106.80 |
| Hungary | e-vignette, category D1 | 10 days HUF 6,900, month HUF 11,170, year HUF 61,760 |
| Italy | toll plazas, by distance | depends on the section, mostly +1.5% from 1 Jan 2026 |
| Croatia | toll plazas or ENC, by distance | depends on the section |
Austria
The 2026 Austrian annual vignette is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027. Note that a digital annual or 2-month vignette bought online by a private customer only becomes valid on the 18th day after purchase. If you need it straight away, buy it at a sales point or choose the 1-day or 10-day vignette, which are valid immediately. Some Alpine sections and tunnels charge a separate route toll. Anyone caught without a vignette must pay a substitute toll, otherwise fines range from €300 to €3,000.
Hungary
The Hungarian e-vignette must be bought no later than 60 minutes after entering a toll section. Besides the national vignette there are cheaper county vignettes valid only on certain sections. The most common reasons for a fine are the wrong category, a mistyped plate or the wrong country of registration. The basic surcharge for a car is HUF 27,790 if paid within 60 days.
Italy and Croatia
In Italy you take a ticket when you enter the motorway and pay by distance when you leave, in cash, by card or with a Telepass device. On most of the network tolls rose by 1.5 percent on 1 January 2026. Croatia also charges by distance, at toll plazas or with an ENC device. In recent years Croatia has introduced higher seasonal prices in summer, so check the operator’s current price list before you set off.
How to cut your toll costs
- Work out which vignette pays off. Two 7-day vignettes cost as much as a monthly one, and the annual pays off if you would otherwise buy four monthly or eight weekly vignettes.
- Buy from official sellers to avoid resellers’ commission.
- Buy the Austrian vignette in good time and allow for the 18-day delay on online annual purchases.
- Check validity before a long trip. The eVinjeta app shows the expiry date in seconds.
- If you cross the Karavanke often, consider the multi-trip card.
