How the Driving Test in Slovenia Works and What It Costs

The driving test for a car licence (category B) in Slovenia has two parts: a computer-based theory test on traffic rules, followed by a practical road test. Before that you need a first aid exam, a medical certificate and at least 20 hours of lessons with a driving school. According to the Slovenian ministry, the whole process costs roughly €1,000 to €1,500, depending mainly on how many lessons you need.

In short: category B training can start at 17½ and you take the road test at 18. The legal minimum is 20 driving hours, but most learners need 30–40. The official fee for the theory test is €42.10 (€28.50 for a retake) and about €37.50 for the road test. After a fail you can retake the test after five days.

Who can take the category B driving test

In Slovenia you can start category B training at a driving school at 17 and a half, and take the road test once you turn 18. Younger learners can also practise with an accompanying driver, who is entered in the learner’s driving record card. The accompanying driver has to meet legal conditions on age, years of driving experience and penalty points, so check them with the driving school before you start.

Driving schools run the training, while the tests are held by the public Traffic Safety Agency (AVP) at its test centres across Slovenia.

The process step by step

The order varies slightly between schools, but the usual route to a licence looks like this:

CPR practice on a first aid course before the driving test
  1. First aid exam – taken with the Slovenian Red Cross. The course is optional, though most candidates attend it; the pass certificate does not expire. Exemptions apply, for example, to health professionals and trained rescuers.
  2. Medical check – an authorised occupational health doctor issues a medical certificate for drivers. Without a valid certificate you cannot take the practical part.
  3. Traffic rules course – theory lessons at the driving school, where you also receive your driving record card.
  4. Theory test – a computer test at an AVP test centre lasting no more than 40 minutes. The result is simply “pass” or “fail”.
  5. Practical training – at least 20 hours with an instructor; the first hour takes place on a training ground.
  6. Road test – it has several parts, and the drive in traffic lasts at least 25 minutes.
  7. Novice driver and safe-driving course – after passing you receive your licence and novice driver status, and within a set period you must complete an additional course called “varna vožnja” (safe driving).

How much the driving test in Slovenia costs

There is no single price, because driving schools set their own rates for lessons and courses. The official test fees, however, are the same everywhere and have not changed since 2018. The table summarises typical amounts from figures published by schools, the Red Cross and AVP.

Item Approximate cost
First aid exam (with course) about €100
Medical check €50–80
Traffic rules course €100–130
Theory test (first / retake) €42.10 / €28.50
Driving lesson (per hour) about €35–45
Category B road test about €37.50
Safe-driving course after the test from about €125

Packages with the basic 20 hours and the traffic rules course start at just under €900 in the larger towns. Extra lessons drive the final bill up the most: every ten hours above the minimum adds roughly €400. In practice, the question of what the test costs becomes a question of how many hours you will need.

How many driving lessons you need

The law requires at least 20 hours of practical driving before you can be entered for the test. In practice that is rarely enough. Driving schools in Ljubljana report an average of around 35 to 40 hours, sometimes more, while in smaller towns with calmer traffic it tends to be a little lower.

How to need fewer lessons

  • Drive regularly, ideally several times a week, so skills do not fade between lessons.
  • If you can, practise with an accompanying driver – it is much cheaper than a school lesson.
  • Before the test, drive the local test routes, including at rush hour.
  • Reinforce the theory with practice tests, as a solid grasp of right-of-way rules also makes driving easier.

Test dates and waiting times

Your driving school books the test for you, and waiting times vary a lot by region. At the end of 2025, learners in the Ljubljana region sometimes waited more than three months for a road test, so AVP and the Ministry of Infrastructure added weekend test slots and brought in more examiners. By early 2026 waits in Ljubljana, Domžale, Kranj and Jesenice had fallen to around two months, and in Maribor and Ptuj to ten days at most. The wait for the theory test is usually shorter.

Check current dates and fees on the website of the Slovenian Traffic Safety Agency (AVP) or with your driving school. You can choose a test centre with an earlier date if it suits you, but bear in mind that you will not know its test routes.

What if you fail

You can retake the theory or the practical part no sooner than five days after your last attempt. You pay the fee again for each retake, and before a new road test you will usually do a few extra lessons so the instructor can judge whether you are ready. Roughly half of candidates pass the road test, so failing is nothing unusual – according to AVP, 50.55 percent of the 4,726 candidates who took the road test in March 2023 passed.
